This week we’re discussing “Take Pride in Our Appearance.” We must understand that “Taking Pride in Our Appearance” is our reputation. Our reputation is the hardest thing in life to KEEP and the easiest thing to LOSE.
We all have cleaned up our house or work area for weeks preparing for visitors, and the day after the visit it was back in a mess, followed by another unexpected visitor the next week with no time to clean. We started our “5S” many years ago at Tape Craft to help us with our housekeeping and to always be ready for customers, visitors, tours or anything that comes to our door. (5S is a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seisō, seiketsu, and shitsuke. These have been translated as “Sort,” “Set In order,” “Shine,” “Standardize,” and “Sustain.”)
As many of you remember, Mr. Kitano (YKK USA Macon’s first factory manager) had a farewell tour in the USA on Monday, August 6, 2007 at 8:00 AM, which is when he would arrive for a meeting (Yes, I will always remember that date, time, place). The week before, we had everything in place and ready. Then, at 3:00 AM Monday morning, I got the call that the exhaust fan in the restroom in the front office had caught on fire and the sprinklers had come on and flooded the office. By the time Mr. Kitano arrived, we had it all fixed and cleaned. Talk about pride… I was so proud that we got it done before he arrived!
It takes a team effort in our facility to keep it well organized, neat, and clean. One of the many things that makes me proud to work at Tape Craft is our teamwork. Taking pride in our appearance affects many areas, including housekeeping, safety, the environment, and quality.
Next time you walk around your work area and see something lying on the floor, pick it up. If you see something out of place, correct it immediately. Others will see you and it will catch on. Our reputation depends on it.
