The action to give back is defined in the dictionary as a way “to provide help or financial assistance to others in appreciation of one’s own success or good fortune.” The definition makes the action to give back sound so simple and so generic, almost as simple as when you check out at the grocery store and they ask you if you want to round to the next dollar, you say “yes” and BOOM, you have given back! But to give back goes way deeper than that.
To me, the action “give back” means so much more than just a volunteer effort or financial assistance. Giving back is a selfless gesture that can include not only your time and money, but your energy, your kindness, your willingness, and your positivity, as you never know who will prosper from it.
A few years ago, I asked myself, “What more can I do to give back to the people around me that goes beyond volunteering and providing financial assistance?” I learned that although giving back through volunteer work and providing financial help is a huge and amazing support, there is more we can do to help give back.
It can be the simple smile you gave a person who needed that little something to brighten their day, the uplifting words you told someone that needed to hear those words of encouragement, asking that co-worker or friend if they needed a helping hand when they felt like they were drowning, but did not want to ask for it, or simply donating to the Employee Assistance Fund to help a fellow colleague you may never meet.
We may not be able to control every aspect in life, but what we can control is making a difference to strengthen the things and people around us. When giving back, you gain a unique sense of purpose and make such a strong impact.
I recently saw a post a friend of mine made on social media sharing pictures of a volunteering event they hosted for the first time since the pandemic and something she wrote stuck with me: “Be a blessing to someone and spread kindness like wildfire!” I look back at the last year we have all had and now more than ever do these words apply and complement this week’s Fundamental Behavior.
I challenge all of you to find a way to give back, whether it is through volunteering, donating to a special cause, or uplifting someone in a time of need. Whichever shape or form you choose to give back, give it your all, remember that you are a blessing to someone, and spread that kindness like wildfire!
