Be a team player

Since I was a child, my parents encouraged in me the love for sports, especially those in which I was part of a team, from basketball or volleyball to soccer.  Although I never excelled in any of them, we achieved some triumphs and trophies in school. The reason was because even though we didn't have a big star in those sports, we were taught to work, collaborate and support each other in order to be a real team.

Since then, supporting and collaborating to form work teams is something I consider important to get the best results in all the activities I do. Fortunately YKK shares this principle and has given me the opportunity to be part of a great team of staff and professionals who strive and give their best to support each other to achieve the best results.

I remember some years ago there was a rowing competition in Spain, where due to an unfortunate situation a "canoeist" or team member halfway through the competition lost his oar. For a moment the "canoeist" did not know whether it was better to jump out of the canoe so that his team would not carry his "dead" weight or to continue inside the canoe; but the canoe leader told him not to jump out and to stay in his place so that the canoe would not become unbalanced and he continued to make the movements as if he were still paddling along with the rest of the team.

The rest of the team tried much harder to make up for that missing paddle and despite being at a disadvantage they managed to win the competition.

I learned several lessons from that example. First, when you work as a team, the skills of the members are added and their efforts are enhanced, the time invested in the activities is reduced and the efficiency of the results is increased. Second, leaning on others and at the same time giving them the best of yourself is the key to more easily achieve everything you set out to do as a team. Third, being a leader also means knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the team, understanding the challenges and objectives and coordinating the work to achieve the best results.
